Oftentimes our blog posts are targeted to those who are suffering from anxiety and depression, but it is also important to educate the family and friends of those who suffer. We get questions from family members and loved ones all the time asking: “What should I do when this happens?” or, “How do I handle it when they do that?” These are great questions that are easy to answer, but oftentimes hard to approach in a way that helps the individual who is suffering.

As a result of these questions coming up so often, we have developed a list of five simple rules to follow when trying to help a loved one who is suffering from anxiety or depression. By following these five rules you will be able to offer accurate and effective help. The five rules are:

1.Learn various techniques for managing anxiety and depression. Seek out books and videos on the subject.

2. Be understanding and patient with the person who is struggling with their fears. Avoid arguments and help the individual create a list of realistic, and attainable short-term goals to overcome their obstacle(s).

3. Seek help from a professional for your loved one. The more people involved with helping them, the better.

4. Discuss what will happen if the individual does not seek help. Making the potential results of their lack of action real could help them to find motivation to act. Anxiety and depression often snowball if things are not addressed in a timely manner. This attempts to prevent that.

5. Discuss the reasons why your loved one does not seek help. This could help them realize that the logic of their decision may not be sound. Oftentimes, those who struggle with anxiety and depression get stuck making decisions that are based on emotion rather than fact. By clearing this up for them, they could find the motivation and courage to act in the face of their struggle.

When someone is in the throes of anxiety and depression, it can be hard for them to even start the process of seeking treatment. That is why it might be important for you to help them take action. Knowing what treatments are available will help you help them sooner. The three most common are talk therapy, antidepressants, and ketamine infusion therapy.
